ESEM  2016

Call for papers

The ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement (ESEM) is the premier conference for presenting research results related to empirical software engineering. These include results on: i) empirical methods and the design and analysis of empirical studies; ii) the strengths and weaknesses of software engineering technologies and methods from a strong empirical viewpoint, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed studies; and iii) the systematic use of data and measurement to understand, evaluate, and model software engineering phenomena. The symposium encourages the submission of both novel work and replication studies. We explicitly encourage the submission of “failed” empirical studies (failed in terms of “not delivering the expected results”).

ESEM provides a stimulating forum where researchers and practitioners can present and discuss recent research results on a wide range of topics, in addition to also exchanging ideas, experiences and challenging problems.

The relevant topics include, but are not restricted to, the following:

● New ideas pertaining to empirical evaluation of software engineering technologies, methods, and tools, e.g., transferring and applying empirical methods from other disciplines to empirical software engineering
● Infrastructures and novel techniques/tools for supporting any phase of empirical studies
● Empirical studies using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods
● Cross- and multi-disciplinary methods and studies
● Experiments and quasi-experiments
● Case studies, action-research, and field studies
● Survey research
● Systematic literature reviews and mapping studies
● Meta-analysis, qualitative and quantitative synthesis of studies
● Replication of empirical studies and families of studies
● Empirically-based decision making
● Evaluation and comparison of techniques and models
● Development and evaluation of empirical prediction systems or software estimation models
● Mining software engineering repositories
● Modeling, measuring, and assessing product and/or process quality
● Simulation-based studies in software engineering
● Assessing the benefits / costs associated with using certain development technologies
● Industrial experience, Software project experience, and knowledge management
● Software technology transfer to the industry

The use of structured abstracts with headings: Background, Aims, Method, Results and Conclusions is required for all papers. If not mentioned elsewise, papers should contain an explicit description of the empirical strategy applied. Submissions will be peer reviewed by at least three experts from the international program committees.

All submissions must be written in English and formatted according to the ACM manuscript templates for conference proceedings. Any papers that exceed the maximum number of pages given for the respective category, or are outside the scope of the symposium, or do not follow the formatting guidelines will be rejected without review. All papers must be submitted through https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=esem2016 in PDF format. Please select the appropriate track (see below) for your submission.

Accepted contributions must have a minimum of one author registration by the time of the deadline for the camera-ready submission for the respective paper type. One registration corresponds to only one paper. For a second (or further) paper by the same author, an additional registration is possible with a 50% discount.

We are looking forward to receiving submissions in the following categories:

Full papers

Full papers should describe original, unpublished work, which is not under parallel submission elsewhere. This is the most demanding category. Reviews will be rigorous. It is advisable to follow research / reporting guidelines. It is expected that full papers have a clearly motivated research goal (e.g., by referring to the state of the art), follow a traceable research methodology, if appropriate, precisely discuss empirical design taking into account threats to validity, provide complete results and a sound analysis, as well as coherent conclusions.

Full papers are limited to ten (10) pages and must be submitted selecting the track “Full Papers” in https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=esem2016.

Short papers or work-in-progress reports

The goal of short papers or work-in-progress reports is to promote current work in research and practice. Short papers represent an early communication of research and do not necessarily require complete results or full empirical evaluation. In this way, authors can introduce new ideas to the community, discuss ideas and get early feedback. Please note that short papers are NOT intended to be position statements or reporting on systematic literature review or mapping study results.

Short papers must not exceed six (6) pages and must be submitted selecting the track “Short Papers” in https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=esem2016.

Posters

Posters are ideal for presenting speculative, late-breaking results or for presenting new and innovative work (in its earliest stage), or position statements. The goal of a poster is to encourage and facilitate small groups of individuals interested about the topic to join into a discussion. Posters that present work in progress and draw important conclusions from practical experience are especially welcome. Submissions in this category have to be concise and to convey sufficient details to attract attention. Accepted posters have to be carefully designed so that they attract the attention of attendees as they stroll along the displays and that the interested audience can easily capture their content.

To make posters more attractive for both authors and the audience, we will provide a setting fostering interaction. The ESEM “Posters Sessions” will be separated from the rest of sessions, co-located with breaks, providing sufficient space and time for authors and the audience to interact. The benefit for the authors is to get immediate, personal feedback from conference attendees in an informal and interactive setting. The benefit for the attendees is the opportunity to see emerging work in the field in a more relaxed and interactive setting.

Poster proposals must not exceed two (2) pages and must be submitted selecting the track “Posters” in https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=esem2016.

Industry reports

A major goal of ESEM is to disseminate results of interest to both researchers and practitioners. The ESEM Industry track provides practitioners and contributors from the industry with an opportunity to publish experience reports of potential interest to the researcher and practitioner communities. Industry experience reports describe the stories and outcomes (positive or negative) of evaluating or deploying software engineering technologies, ideas, practices, tools, processes, or methods in an industrial setting. The submission should include information on the setting, provide motivation, explain the events leading to the outcomes, including the challenges faced, summarize the outcomes, and conclude with lessons learned, take-away messages, and advice based on the experience described and lessons learned. An extensive description of related work or background material is not required. At least one contributing author must be from industry.

Papers should not exceed six (6) pages and must be submitted selecting the track “Industry reports” in https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=esem2016.

Awards

Accepted papers in each category, receiving best scores from the reviewers will be considered for best paper awards. There will also be a best reviewer award.
