  • XI Edition of the BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award

    20th February 2019

Our director Mario Piattini is part of jurado of the BBVA Foundation's 11th Edition of the Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Information and Communication Technologies, which has awarded Ivan Sutherland for revolutionising human-machine interaction through computer graphics and virtual reality.

Throughout his more than sixty-year career, Sutherland "has combined his deep knowledge of technology with an understanding of human behavior to transform people's interaction with computers," the record goes on. "Today, any user of a computer or smartphone benefits from their vision and contributions. In 1963, a time when punched cards were still being used, Sutherland presented his doctoral thesis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1963 and supervised by the father of information theory Claude Shannon, was a milestone: the program Sketchpad, which demonstrated that graphical computing allows intuitive interaction with computers, and that it is generally considered a precursor to current graphical interfaces, from the Apple-initiated window system to app icons. For all these reasons, the jury describes him as "the father of computer graphics".
