ECLIPSE (Enhancing Data Quality and Security for Improving Business Processes and Strategic Decisions in Cyber Physical Systems)

Financed by: Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness and FEDER funds
Total Amount: 85246 €
Identifier Code: RTI2018-094283-B-C31

Summary:

Companies are increasingly dependent on their Information Systems for strategic decision-making and process optimization, and adequate and secure management of the information they handle is critical. Information Systems are rapidly evolving towards more complex environments that incorporate new functions and devices that allow a greater capacity to know and intelligently manage a large amount of information. This information not only comes from classic data sources but also from the quantification of the real world, turning the classic Information Systems into new Systems that not only operate in the digital world, but also act on the real world, giving rise to what is increasingly known as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS Cyber-Physical Systems).

These new systems have sensorization, computing, storage, actuation and intercommunication capabilities that support the monitoring and control of real world objects. Due to their distributed nature in a physical environment, CPS require intelligent processing in the devices themselves and communication and collaboration with others, forcing the integration of heterogeneous data, using technologies such as Cloud Computing, Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT).

SCPs have become the focus of interest of all types of actors (academia, industry, governments, etc.) because of the influence they have and may have on society, industry, the economy and the environment. This integrated paradigm improves the quality of life of citizens and provides advances, among others, in health (e-health), emergency management, traffic and transport, Industry 4.0, defense, energy, smart hotels (Smart Hotels) or smart farms (Smart Farming).

These combined, intelligent systems with permanent Internet connection have led to the emergence of scenarios with high interaction between the real and virtual worlds and require the provision of scalable and secure solutions for existing architectures. Thus, the main objective of this project is to provide models, methods and techniques that allow organizations to successfully face projects in the new context of computing with CPS, focusing primarily on four areas of improvement of CPS, which are, processes in the organization, business analytics, data quality and integration, and cyber security. These areas of improvement cover three different levels of abstraction: (i) organizational and strategic dimension, (ii) design and construction of SCP and (iii) operation and maintenance of these systems.

The four working groups have managed to reach a sufficiently global vision of the problem to be solved, contributing their knowledge and experience. Thus, a highly integrated project is proposed following a work plan with strongly cohesive tasks. There are no isolated sub-projects from the research point of view, but an integrated coordinated project that benefits from the combination of the knowledge of the different nodes. We are completely convinced that, without this global vision, the objectives of ECLIPSE would not be achievable through independent projects and, therefore, this project is requested in the coordinated project modality.
