  • How to approach a doctoral thesis in Software Engineering combining research methods?

    20th November 2018

Our colleague Marcela Genero Bocco gave a seminar on How to approach a doctoral thesis in Software Engineering combining research methods, in the Department of Computer Systems and Computing of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. This seminar is organised by the PROS Research Centre.
The main objective of this seminar is to show doctoral students how to raise and motivate research in Software Engineering by attending to various research questions and how to select the appropriate research method to answer each of them. For this purpose, an overview of the main empirical methods will be shown, both quantitative and qualitative: Experiments, Surveys and Case Studies, analysing the pros and cons of each one. Special emphasis will be placed on the fact that the application of a single method is not always sufficient, but that it is necessary to combine and develop them in both academic and industrial environments, in order to achieve the objectives set. As an example, a doctoral thesis will be presented that studies the benefits of UML modeling in software maintenance.
