EMMA (Evaluating and Improving the Environmental Sustainability of Applications)

Financed by: JCCM, Regional Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and ERDF Funds.
Total Amount: 119089 €
Identifier Code: SBPLY/21/180501/000115

The main objective of the EMMA project is to assess and improve the environmental sustainability of advanced software applications. Specifically, the aim of this project is to: O1.- Evaluate the environmental sustainability of advanced software applications through the application of empirical studies. O2.- Evolve our technological environment for measuring the energy consumption of software (FEETINGS) towards an environment that supports the measurement of the consumption of advanced software applications. O3.- Develop the software environment that supports the evaluation of the environmental sustainability of advanced software applications. In order to achieve these objectives, we must determine the characteristics of the software to be evaluated, which will be named as “advanced software applications” in the sense that these applications are not being executed exclusively on a local device or computer and may require the use of the Internet and/or other external resources. Based on these characteristics, we will be able to propose evaluation cases that will allow us to determine their environmental sustainability. In addition, as a result, a set of guidelines and improvements should be proposed that will support developers and ICT companies to improve the sustainability of advanced software applications. In the same way, technological support will be provided including the software tools that allow the automation of the evaluation and, therefore, make it easier for companies and developers to evaluate their applications, thus transferring the results obtained at the research level to the software industry.
