  • Application of a new technique to the study of the long-term population evolution in the province of Ciudad Real

    19th June 2023

Continuing the work of the D2CR project, and using data from all censuses between 1900 and 2021, our colleague Francisco Ruiz has carried out a study of the long-term evolution of the population of the province and its 102 municipalities. It has revealed the differences between periods: a sharp increase between 1900 and 1960, followed by a sharp fall until 1981 and then maintenance, with some ups and downs. It has also showed the different behaviour of the different areas of the province, with two thirds of the municipalities, most of them in the south and west of the province, have less population now than in 1900. This situation is common to much of inland Spain (the study shows that 17 other provinces have fared worse). The report is available at https://d2cr.uclm.es/. The official population figures have been adjusted to correct for changes between municipalities (segregations, separations, mergers, etc.). This adjustment has been made by applying a technique, devised by Francisco Ruiz, which solves two needs when analyzing time series referring to territories that do not remain stable: i) a data structure to represent all possible territorial changes in a single and homogeneous way; and ii) an algorithm that allows calculations to be made forward or backward in time. This technique was proposed by our colleague in the article "Typology and representation of alterations in territorial units: A proposal", published in the indexed journal "Journal of Official Statistics".
